RISKS IN TRANSPORTING COAL IN SEAGOING SHIPS
1983
Though generally regarded as a "safe" cargo, coal can be dangerous in some circumstances. After a brief discussion on the different types of coal and their characteristics, the article explains the dangers that may arise in coal cargoes owing to self-heating of the coal; explosion in the cargo due to evolution of explosive gases, an extremely rare occurrence; and shifting of coal slurry containing excess water. Recommendations on the prevention of such occurrences are included.
