The use of wireless motility capsule in the diagnosis and monitoring of gastroparesis

2021
Abstract Gastroparesis is a chronic condition characterized by delayed gastric emptying in the absence of mechanical obstruction, which results in typical symptoms of nausea, vomiting, abdominal fullness, early satiation, bloating, distention and upper abdominal pain. While gastric emptying scintigraphy (GES) is the most commonly ordered test for diagnosis of gastroparesis, wireless motility capsule (WMC) can measure transit and pressure parameters throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract. As gastroparesis frequently presents with co-existing upper and lower gastrointestinal symptoms, this ability to monitor the entire GI tract may provide additional diagnostic information with the potential to identify important subgroups of patients, influence clinical decision making and potentially reduce or eliminate additional diagnostic testing.
