In vitro Testing of the Antibacterial Activity of Root Extracts of Chlorophytum borivilianum against Organisms Causing Postnatal Infections

2018
ABSTRACT The present study was carried out to study the antibacterial activities of root extracts of Chlorophytum borivilianum. The extract was prepared using different solvents like water, Tris-HCl, phosphate buffer, isopropanol, butanol-water and acetone. The antibacterial activity was tested against different bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli which cause postnatal infections, by agar diffusion method. Zone of inhibition produced by different extracts was tabulated. Butanol-water extract showed maximum antibacterial activity against all the organisms tested in the order of sensitivity as E. coli > Staphylococcus > Pseudomonas > Klebsiella > Proteus. Keywords: Chlorophytum borivilianum, safed musli, root extracts, antibacterial activity, zone of inhibition.
