ANALYSIS OF SHIP STRUCTURES, PART 1: ANALYSIS OF FRAMES

1971
Because of the variety of special service ship types presently being designed, the patterns of their structural arrangements are so variegated that the designer must be extremely familiar with the fundamentals of the analysis of statically indeterminate beams and frames. The author summarizes pertinent principles related to the energy of deformation and reviews some fundamental structural analysis theorems. For analyzing statically indeterminate structures, examples are given showing calculations for two- dimensional structures assuming conditions such as variable cross- sections, axially loaded elements, and shear deformation effects. Solutions are presented using the slope deflection method and the iteration technique. Frames having members of non-uniform stiffness are also considered.
