Analysis on water pollution features and cause leading to pollution in Shuimo River

The article is aimed to introduce the author's investigation and analysis of the water pollution features and the causes leading to the pollution in Shuimo River. As a matter of fact, the River is located near Urumqi city, Xinjiang. At present, Shuimo River is one of the main irrigational water resources of the city. The water in the river has been severely polluted. The given investigation and analysis is done on the basis of the data collected on the four monitoring sections of the river during the period of 1986 and 2003 by Urumqi environmental monitoring centre. The water quality of Shuimo River has been evaluated by the integrated index and standards such as GB 3838—2002 (Surface Water Environmental Quality Standards). The results show that the water environmental quality of Tangcichang Spring section stands between the clean water quality and that of the light pollution. As to the water environmental quality of Qifang Bridge' section, Lianfeng Bridge' section and that of Miquan Bridge section all belong to the degree of serious pollution. Of the above mentioned sections, water environment of Miquan Bridge' section belongs to the most seriously polluted degree. The primary pollution is due to the NH3-N, COD Mn, BOD5, excrement large intestine bacteria colony and the oil pollution. The analysis shows that sewage current volume of the River takes 38% of the river water volume, which makes it a sewage river true to its name. And the pollution trend of the River has also been intensified. Thus, it can be said that it has become the task of top priority to regulates and control its pollution. And, in turn, the government should push the large and medium-sized enterprises to increase the investment into its purification and speeding up the relief and control of the sewage treatment. As to the environmental protection departments of all levels concerned, they should be resolute in shutting down the small businesses causing pollutions, perfect river banks' trash collection systems and improve on the banks' drainage network system so as to bring a rudimental change of the water quality of the river.
