The invention discloses a novel multi-core backward compatible connector which comprises plugs and sockets. The plugs are five rows of 160-core plugs, and comprise pin insulators and five rows of 160-core pin contact bodies which are fixed in the pin insulators through interference fit. Three middle rows of pin contact bodies are square pin contact bodies. Two rows of pin contact bodies on both ends are surface mount pin contact bodies. The sockets are five rows of 160-core sockets, and comprise jack insulators and five rows of 160-core jack contact bodies which are fixed in the jack insulators through interference fit. Three middle rows of jack contact bodies are in two-side elastic piece contact structure. Two rows of jack contact bodies on both ends are in single-side elastic piece contact structure. Three middle rows of pin contact bodies and three middle rows of jack contact bodies are in piercing type interference fit. Two rows of pin contact bodies on both ends and two rows of jack contact bodies on both ends are in surface mount interference fit. According to the invention, the plugs and the sockets can accommodate three rows or five rows of products at the same time, and backward compatibility is realized.
