The character of history of education in the Netherlands and Belgium has undergone important changes since the sixties. Before, it's main aim was to support education by means of a reconstruction of the ideas of important (male) educators. Since the sixties, it has become more and more oriented towards the socio-historical study of educational practices. While this development has certainly increased the quality of the research and thereby has contributed to the emancipation of the field, it is argued that the time has come to evaluate the positive and negative effects of the socio-historical 'turn' and reconsider the relationship between history of education and the educational sciences.
