MULBERRY AVENUE (SH 14) AND LEMAY AVENUE INTERSECTION ALTERNATIVES ANALYSIS

2000
The intersection of Mulberry Avenue (SH 14) and Lemay Avenue currently has peak hour congestion and is projected to experience significant growth in traffic volumes from proposed development in northeast Fort Collins. The City of Fort Collins successfully applied for and has received Federal CMAQ (Congestion Management Air Quality - Project AQC M455-049) funds for an alternative analysis of intersection improvements. These funds are also designated for the engineering design and construction of the selected preferred alternative improvements, including a pedestrian bridge over the Cache la Poudre River. Three alternatives were developed. The first was a conventional four-lane Mulberry alternative with additional left and right turn lanes. The second alternative was widening of Mulberry from Link Lane to Riverside Drive with auxiliary turn lane additions. The third alternative was a Modern Roundabout with three circulating lanes. Two roundabout options were examined: (1) a roundabout with at-grade pedestrian and bicycle crossings; and (2) a grade-separated alternative.
