2020
‘Japonica 7’ is a early maturing japonica rice variety adaptable to tropical region, which was developed from a cross between ‘Japonica 2’ and ‘IR11K233’ by a Korea (Rural Development Administration, RDA) - International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) cooperative breeding program at IRRI in 2020. The culm length of ‘Japonica 7’ was 74.5 cm, and 1,000-brown rice grain weight was 23.3 g. ‘Japonica 7’ is moderately resistant to blast and bacterial blight but susceptible to tungro virus and brown plant hopper. The milled rice recovery rate of ‘Japonica 7’ was similar to that of ‘MS 11’. The head rice rate of ‘Japonica 7’ was significantly higher than that of ‘MS 11’. Average yield of ‘Japonica 7’ was 3.03 MT/ha of milled rice in 5 areas of the Philippines. ‘Japonica 7’ was registered in Philippines and can be adaptable to the diverse regions of tropical Asia (Registration No in Philippines. BPI-NSIC-2019-Rc 584).
