Cigarette smokers with a mood symptom history enrolled in a physical activity trial.

2021
Cigarette smoking is prevalent among individuals with mood disorders, and particularly among those with bipolar disorder1 . Given that depression and smoking independently predict poor cardiovascular health over time, understanding the characteristics of smokers with depression who engage in interventions to improve their cardiovascular health (e.g., physical activity interventions) could inform upcoming public health interventions. There have been some prior studies of physical activity-based interventions for smoking cessation among cigarette smokers, but previous physical activity studies have focused on smoking cessation and, to our knowledge, have not examined characteristics associated with bipolar disorder (e.g., symptoms of (hypo)mania).
