Among the con-stituents, PAHs and phenols are considered as important pollu-tants because of their toxicity and high contents in creosote. For example, the US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has defined 16 PAHs and 11 phenols, which are found in high quantities in creosote, as priority pollutants.
