Development of Driving Safety Support Systems Using DSRC - A Specific Active Safety Measure for Preventing Accidents in Right/Left Turns at Intersections

2011
This paper describes a practical system that has been developed to address the question of how to prevent accidents with other vehicles or pedestrians present in places difficult for drivers to see. Such accidents are especially apt to occur when turning right or left at intersections. Specifically, a driving safety support system (DSSS) is proposed that operates in cooperation with the roadside infrastructure. The proposed DSSS uses the roadside infrastructure to detect the presence of difficult-to-see collision partners and that information is conveyed as quickly as possible to the driver via an infrastructure-vehicle communication system using Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC). If necessary, the system issues an alert to call the driver’s attention to a potential risk. The usefulness of the proposed DSSS has been validated in a public road test, which also verified the feasibility of the system.
