Synthesis, properties, and structure of complexes of cobalt(II) with N/sup 1/-aryl-substituted arylamidrazones

Complex compounds of Co(II) with N/sup 1/-(4-R/sup 2/-phenyl)(4-R/sup 1/-phenyl)amidrazones (L) (R/sup 2/, R/sup 1/ = H, Cl, Br, NO/sub 2/, CH/sub 3/, OCH/sub 3/) having the general formula CoL/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/, previously undescribed, have been synthesized by reacting solutions of Co(OAc)/sub 2/ and of the amidrazone hydrochlorides L x HCl in 50% ethanol. On the basis of an analysis of the x-ray photoelectron spectra and of the IR and electronic absorption spectra, as well as the data from quantum-chemical calculations and elemental analysis, it has been shown that in the complexes synthesized the Co(II) atom is found in an octahedral environment of ligands and that the amidrazones act as neutral bidentate ligands and appear in the composition of the complexes in the imino form.
