Bartonella bacilliformis anaemia (Oroya fever) is indigenous only to western South America1. The disease is diagnosed by identifying the morphology of the causative organisms (Bartonella bacilliformis) on the erythrocyte. “On the red blood cells it is unmistakable, and no other human parasite resembles it even slightly.”2
