VDOT Planning for Section 1201

This presentation will provide information on VDOT planning to meet the FHWA Section 1201 “Real-Time System Management Information Program” rule. It will discuss the VDOT’s planning requirements for provisioning traffic and travel conditions including construction activities, roadway or lane blocking incidents, roadway weather observations and travel time information including information accuracy and information availability. The presentation will also cover VDOT’s expected establishment of this real-time information program in the Interstate system highways and state-designated metropolitan routes of significance. In addition, preliminary costs and benefits of the real-time information program will be discussed. The presentation will depict how existing Virginia tools and systems are planned to be leveraged in satisfying the Section 1201 rulemaking. For example the recently completed Virginia ITS architectures will be used to scope and define the initial real-time information program.
