Highly accurate measurement of small-scale ship motions

2009
Physical models are very often used to study the wave-induced motions of moored ships in a port. The motions of the model ships at a small scale are usually very small and need to be measured accurately. An improved video monitoring system based on keograms has been developed to monitor the ship motions with an accuracy of 0.1 mm. The forces in mooring lines and fenders can be calculated from the determined ship motions and the known stiffness of mooring lines and fenders. Results of forces in mooring lines and fenders correspond well with forces measured directly using strain gauges. The system is easy to set up and only requires standard cameras and computers.
