SWOT Matrix and Strategies for Battery Electric Vehicles Adoption in Brazil

2021
Battery powered electric vehicles (BEV) are gaining prominence as a mobility alternative. Early in automotive history, they lost ground to vehicles powered by internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEV); however, recent progress is allowing reintroduction and even widespread adoption in certain countries and regions. In the Brazilian context, there are uncertainties regarding the transition to this new technological route. The competitiveness and main strategies related to adoption of BEVs in Brazil are analyzed through a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) matrix, contributing to the production of relevant knowledge and assisting decision makers in consistent and coherent choices within the scope of the various sectors that are impacted by the characteristics of the Brazilian vehicular transport matrix. It is concluded that hybridization is very adequate to the Brazilian scenario, and the purely electric vehicles might remain in restricted and elite markets until overcoming of huge technological and market obstacles present to the BEVs.
