In this chapter, the fundamental concepts of process control are presented to set the basic foundations of this book. An Isothermal Continuous Tank Reactor is used as an example to explain the methodology that is employed within the control field. The chapter focuses on the usage of the proportional-integral–derivative controller as the fundamental algorithm to close the loop in any process system. The modeling of the plant is also considered as well as its normalized representation used for control tuning.
