Biological effects of acoustic energy on the oral bacteria Wolinella recta

1989
The oral bacteria, Wolinella recta, were exposed to sonic energy both aerobically and anaerobically for various durations. It was observed that a significantly greater number of bacteria were killed in an aerobic environment. The results indicate a previously unreported effect of acoustic energy on anaerobic bacteria. The effect has potential use in a home-based sonic dental instrument for controlling bacterial plaque formation. >
