The present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for connecting an external device in a portable terminal which include checking a connection method of an external device among a plurality of connection methods based on values of at least two ports among the ports of a connector; and switching at least one switch included in a connection unit to be connected to the external device in the aforementioned connection method.
