Submission to the government on Canadas position statement to the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo 1994.

1993
The 9 authors of this position paper advocate modifications in the official Canadian statement for the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development to highlight the environmental impact of population growth. At present Canadas demographic profile is that of slow population growth and population concentration in urban centers. The Canadian government is adopting a domestic policy that supports continued moderate growth. The authors however are advocating population stabilization given the enormous demands Canadians make on resources such as energy oil fish and forestland. Unacceptability high levels of nitrogen dioxide carbon monoxide and particulates have eliminated many species of mammals birds and reptiles. Canada is urged to play a leadership role in advocating concurrent population stabilization benign technology development and economic development. Also urged are increased funding to population programs in developing countries insistence on evidence of interventions aimed at improving womens status as a condition of foreign aid increased participation in contraceptive research promotion of lower per capita consumption and careful consideration of the environmental impact of programs intended to improve the standard of living in developing countries.
