Comparison of vitreous and plasma levels of vascular endothelial growth factor, interleukin-6 and hepatocyte growth factor in diabetic and non-diabetic retinal detachment cases.

Abstract We compared the vitreous and plasma levels of proinflammatory cytokines in diabetic patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy. Levels of proinflammatory cytokines in the vitreous were higher in the diabetic patients than the non-diabetics while the levels of plasma cytokines were similar. It is thought that this increase in the vitreous is effective in the progression of angiogenesis and the development of proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
