False-positive mammography and mammography screening intentions among black women: the influence of emotions and coping strategies*

ABSTRACTIntroduction: Abnormal mammograms confirmed as benign are known as false-positive mammography (FPM) results. Research indicates that a history of FPM results may be linked to diagnostic delays in Black women, yet much of the research on FPM has focused on White women.Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine: 1) The influence of FPM on breast cancer (BrCa) screening beliefs and intentions among Black women and 2) Whether emotional states, personality traits or coping behaviors altered the previously described relationships.Design: BrCa-free, Black women, aged 40 and older who completed screening mammograms in 2016 were recruited for a case–control study from 2016 to 2017. Women with FPM results were cases, and women with normal results served as matched controls.
