[Eighty sterilized men: a prospective study with a one year follow-up (authors transl)]

1980
In this investigation of 80 sterilized men the mean age was 36. All but one were married or cohabiting. 5 had no children of their own; 11 had 4 or more children. The operations were carried out on ambulatory patients under local anesthesia and were perceived as painful by 36%. 84% returned to work immediately; others took sick leave for a duration of between 1-14 days. 6 patients (9%) incurred postoperative problems but only 3 needed treatment. 6% complained of sustained slight discomfort 1 year after the operation. Rinsing with a rivanol solution during the operation resulted in a more rapid disappearance of sperm. All sperm samples examined 1 year later were sperm free. 64% of the blood samples analyzed 1 year after the operation revealed sperm-agglutinating antibodies 1:32. Frequency of intercourse increased for 1/4 of the 90 men and declined for one. Over 1/2 judged their sex life to be more successful whereas none felt that it had deteriorated.
