Chemical-modification approach for the near contact regime

2008
In this paper, we present two chemical-modification approaches concerning higher areal recording densities for hard disk drives. One is a reduction of the thickness of the lubricant monolayer in order to achieve narrower magnetic spacing, accomplished through a newly synthesised lubricant. The other is a decrease in the van der Waals force between the head slider and the media-disk in order to obtain stability at an extremely low flying height. This examination was carried out utilising a bonded lubricant on an air-bearing surface.
