2015
Aim: To evaluate the occurance of diagnosis by nurses of symptoms and risks of child abuse and neglec, and to identify affecting factors. Material and Method: This descriptive type study was done between July 2013 and June 2014 Participants were nurses working in pediatric clin- ics and emergency departments at Agri city center, Turkey, who agreed to participate in the study (N=61). A questionnaire and diagnostic scale of symptoms and risks of child abuse and neglect were used. The data was analyzed with percentage distributions, averages, variance and t test. All ethical principals in research were adhered to. Results: The data showed that the the higher the level of education of nurses, the greater their ability to diagnose symptoms of child abuse and identify children who were at risk of child abuse and neglect. The difference between the groups was significant. Specifically, nurses who had training and education about the symptoms of child abuse and neglect had higher diagnosis levels., have difficulty in diagnosis processes of the child abuse and neglect cases. Conclusion: It is recommended that larger studies be done regarding proper identification of child abuse and neglect. It is also recommended that all institutions that deal in pediatric health care implement training programs for nurses on this and that nursing schools include this training in their cur- riculum.
