CONCRETE BLOCK SURFACING FOR AIRFIELD PAVEMENTS.

1996
Concrete block surfacing has potential applications in airfield pavements. In particular, the combination of concrete properties with the ability to lay a relatively thin overlay makes it attractive for the rehabilitation of pavements. This paper describes the state-of-the-art in the use of concrete block surfacing on air-fields. Among the factors considered are its structural contribution, long-term performance under aircraft loadings, and resistance to jet blast. Construction practice, detailing and pavement testing are also discussed. It is concluded that the use of concrete block surfacing is viable, although its structural contribution appears to be limited when laid on rigid bases, and there is currently limited knowledge on its long-term performance, especially under high tyre pressures. Further research is also required into the effects of jet blasts.
