Analysis of structural and heat-physical properties of Sm2(Hf1-xCex)2O7 Ceramics

Abstract In the present study, a series of Sm 2 (Hf 1-x Ce x ) 2 O 7 ceramics were fabricated by solid-state reaction method, and their structural and thermophysical properties were studied. The results indicated that all the Sm 2 (Hf 1-x Ce x ) 2 O 7 oxides exhibited a single fluorite-type structure, except for Sm 2 Hf 2 O 7 which showed a pyrochlore structure. Because of the phonon scattering caused by CeO 2 doping, the heat conductivity of Sm 2 (Hf 1-x Ce x ) 2 O 7 was reduced. The thermal expansion coefficient was also reduced owing to the relatively low electronegativity of Ce 4+ ions. The heat-physical properties of the obtained ceramics met the basic requirements of thermal barrier coatings.
