The necissity to prepare children for the pubertal years : a potential opportunity for the church In society sexual aspects are often overemphasised to address the reality of the AIDS pandemic and problems like abortion, homosexuality and multiple-partner sexual relationships. It creates a misconception of normal bodily changes and psychosocial adjustment. The church has a constructive role to play in preparing children for puberty. Preparation can limit confusion and contribute to realistic expectations and successful mastering of developmental tasks. Characteristics of the pubertal period, as well as the danger involved in the dysfunctional mastering of these developmental tasks are highlighted. Furthermore the challenge to congregations in this regard is put forward.
