Dynamic Instability of Cantilever Pipe Conveying Fluid

The paper investigates the stability characteristics of cantilevered pipe conveying fluid. The fluid is assumed to be incompressible and having steady flow. Gravity forces are taken into consideration. The stability analysis is examined using method of separation of variables. Complex frequencies are evaluated as a function of nondimensional flow velocity considering the first four modes of vibration of cantilever and plotted on the Argand diagram. The result shows that oscillatory instability occurs for the second and third modes of vibration, whereas no instability occurs for the first and fourth modes of vibration of cantilever.
