As a result of a new development of foil-cooling structures for natural draught cooling towers, it has been possible to attain a significant increase in heat transfer performance with a very small tendency to surface deposition during operation. This result has been subsequently confirmed from a comprehensive series of tests following the conversion of a natural draught cooling tower at Didcot Power Plant in England at the end of 1993, this too being in a large-scale installation. On this initial application of the new NPF foil components, an improvement in discharge temperature of more than 3 K has been measured with use of an optimal configuration of a counter-current arrangement with original operating conditions. The new cooling tower components are suitable for both new constructions and equally for the rehabilitation of existing plant.
