A managed model development process utilizing the Joint Modeling and Simulation System (J-MASS)

The Joint Modeling and Simulation System (J-MASS) is the premier standard Modeling and Simulation (MS develop, assemble, configure, execute and post-process. This tool set is known collectively as the Simulation Support Environment (SSE). The tools provided by J-MASS specifically for model developers are the Model Component Development Tool (MCDT) and a code generator. The MCDT is a graphical based tool which assists the user in implementing a standardized object based Model Component (MC) framework. The standardized object based MC framework, or Software Structural Model (SSM), is based upon the Object-Connection-Update model developed by the Software Architectures Engineering project at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). The code generator produces the source code depicted by the MCDT diagrams. Computer Science and Applications Tactical Simulation Group (CSA/TACSIM) began using J-MASS to develop models in support of the Air Force Development Test Center and Wright Armament Laboratory at Eglin AFB, Florida. The Managed Model Development Process covers several key areas and concepts including the methodology for configuration management of individual MCs organized by projects (players), and the implementation of MC reuse among projects through a shared Global Resource Library. Another concept covered by the Model Development Process is the team development approach utilizing J-MASS. The implementation of the Managed Model Development Process and the lessons learned from its employment are presented.
