The affiliation of an institution for the care of the long-term sick (Beth Abraham Home) with a neighboring general hospital (Montefiore Hospital)

1963
Abstract The problem of providing comprehensive medical care to patients in custodial institutions and the attempt of one such institution, The Beth Abraham Home for the Chronically Ill, to solve its medical care problem by an active affiliation with a neighboring teaching institution. Montefiore Hospital, are discussed. Details of the medical and administrative liaisons established between the two institutions for the purpose of medical care, teaching, and staff orientation, and the advantages of the affiliation to both Home and Hospital are described. The authors feel that general hospitals should serve as the focal point for medical and rehabilitative programs for the chronically ill. In their opinion, custodial institutions should affiliate with neighboring general hospitals, and new facilities for the care of the aged and long-term sick would best be constructed directly on the grounds of teaching institutions.
