Effect of various tool pin profiles on temperature rise and mechanical properties of friction stir processed AZ31Mg alloy

2018
Abstract In this investigation an effort has been made to analyse the influence of different tool pin profiles i.e. conical, cylindrical and convex on temperature rise and mechanical properties of friction stir processed AZ31 alloy. Convex, cylindrical tools at lower rotational speed resulted in low temperature rise and temperature increased with increase in rotational speed; for conical tool temperature increased then decreased with increase in rotational speed. Convex tool at lower rotational speed resulted in high tensile strength 203MPa and high percent elongation 4.3% along with lower temperature at retreating side. Highest impact energy 14J was achieved through convex tool followed by cylindrical and conical tool.
