Smart EV charging profiles to extend battery life

The effects of environment pollution, climate change, and extensive use of fossil fuel for transportation are driving the trend to replace internal combustion engine vehicles by Electric Vehicles (EVs). One of the main concerns regarding the increased deployment of EVs is the effect on the grid. In contrast, EVs can provide opportunities to support the grid with Smart charging and Vehicle to Grid (V2G). Implementing these services can impact battery cycle life and performance, which are the main barriers for a wide spread of EVs. This paper focuses on the analysis of EV charging pattern and compare charging patterns and their impact on the battery State of Health (SoH). The experimental work conducted by the authors which includes standard charging profiles and modification of the standard pattern which result in improving battery performance and working life, is presented. The results show a noticeable improvement in battery life by reducing capacity degradation and lowering the rate of increase of the internal resistance of the battery (thus improving battery power capacity).
