Comparison Between Four Different Interregional Air Pollution Models

The “Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society” (CCMS) has been active in air pollution research since 1969. It undertook three pilot studies on various aspects of air pollution. The last one, a pilot study on “Air Pollution Control Strategies and Impact Modelling” was completed in 1984. The study has been carried out by three panels: one concerned with emissions, a second with air quality modelling, and a third with environmental impact assessment. The air quality modelling panel was assigned the task of reviewing the state of the art in relation to interregional modelling (CCMS study 1981; an updated version is presented as chapter 2 of this volume) and on the removal and transformation processes with respect to SO2 and NOX (CCMS study, 1981a; an updated version is presented as chapter 3 of this volume). A third document contains the comparison of a number of interregional transport models. The results of this intercomparison, carried out at the TH Darmstadt by Klug and his coworkers, are presented in this chapter. The intercomparison study was sponsored in part by the Umweltbundesant in Berlin, Federal Republic of Germany and the Ministry of Housing, Physical Planning and Environment in Leidschendam, The Netherlands.
