Virus replication, cytopathology, and lysosomal enzyme response in enucleated HEp-2 cells infected with poliovirus

1979
Abstract Enucleated HEp-2 cells do not support complete replication of poliovirus. However, virus-induced cytopathology (CPE), which normally occurs during interphase in nucleate HEp-2 cells, was observed in the poliovirus-infected enucleated HEp-2 cells. Therefore, involvement of host cell nuclear functions in the development of enterovirus-specific CPE can be ruled out. CPE in poliovirus-infected enucleated HEp-2 cells was not accompanied by a redistribution of lysosomal enzymes, as has been reported for nucleate cells after enterovirus infection.
