Dynamic Energy Storage and Control Management

2019
In this paper, the problem of dynamic energy management for power consumers with renewable energy generators and energy storage devices is studied. The objective of such a power consumer is to minimize its long term time-averaged cost by jointly taking into account the operational constraints of its energy storage device, its stochastic solar power generation and time-varying load, as well as the fluctuating electricity prices. We formulate this energy management problem as a constrained stochastic programming problem. A real-time control algorithm is designed based on the Lyapunov optimization theory to provide an asymptotically optimal solution that can quickly adapt to the system dynamics without requiring any statistics of the system. The performance of the proposed real-time control algorithm is evaluated via both theoretical analysis and numerical simulations. By comparing with a greedy algorithm, it is shown that the proposed control algorithm can save power consumption cost while improving the utilization of renewable energy generation.
