A 34-Year-Old Woman with Chronic Inflammation Due to Crohn’s Disease: Typical MRI Signs

2013
Crohn’s disease is a chronic granulomatous inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract. According to epidemiological studies, the pathology is not uncommon, with 400,000–600,000 people affected in North America alone [1]. The disease occurs in males and females with the same prevalence; the peak age range of disease development is 15–25 years. The etiology is multifactorial but a familial tendency has been described, with an increased risk in first-degree relatives [1, 2, 3]. While many new clinical and surgical therapeutic strategies have been recently introduced, their success depends on an accurate assessment of the extension and severity of the disease.
