Pseudotachylitic Breccia Occurrences and Geometry in the Vredefort Dome and Witwatersrand Basin, South Africa

Impact related pseudotachylitic breccia were emplaced at 2.023 Ga into the 3.4 Ga basement gneiss, the 3.01 to 2.8 Ga auriferous sediments of the Witwatersrand Supergroup, 2.7 Ga volcanics of the Ventersdorp Group and the 2.6 Ga sediments of the Transvaal Supergroup. Field observations together with Ar chronology support multiple pseudotachylite forming events in the Vredefort Dome, with at least a few occurrences clearly preor post-dating the impact event.
