Preparation of granular activated carbon from waste foam polystyrene

Granular activated carbons were prepared from carbonized waste foam polystyrene by physical method(carbonization at 600～650 ℃).Activation time is 60 min,the activation temperature is 800～950 ℃,activation agent is steam.The results shows that the micropore is powerful carbonized waste foam polystyrene is a good precursor for preparation of granular activated carbon.Ash content of unshaped samples was less than 0.20%,iodine adsorption value was higher than 1 200 mg/g.Specific surface area of shaped activated carbons was higher than 1 400 m2/g and iodine adsorption value was reached 1 100 mg/g.
