Comparison of endoscopy and manometry in assessment of lower esophageal sphincter pressure

1978
Lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure as determined by standard manometric techniques was compared to sphincter patency assessed at the time of endoscopy. No correlation was found. However, the LES was more patent in those patients with endoscopic esophagitis, suggesting that some functional aspect of the LES other than absolute closing pressure is being assessed with endoscopy.
