Reflection of Short Millimeter Radiowaves from a Snowcover

2001
We measure the quasi-specular reflection of radiowaves at frequencies 138 and 247 GHz from a natural snowcover. The experimental values of the amplitude reflection coefficient at the above-mentioned frequencies lie in the intervals 0.22–0.43 and 0.15–0.18, respectively. These values were obtained for a grazing angle of 0.4° and for radiation with the horizontal polarization. We discover strong fluctuations of the reflected signal at both frequencies, which are caused by the wind transfer of snow particles near the snowcover surface.
