Lead users are a valuable source of innovation for manufacturers, not just through collaboration in development or application of the lead user method (Herstatt and von Hippel, 1992; Luthje and Herstatt, 2004), but also because of the high probability that they become user innovators. Urban and von Hippel (1988) found in their studies’ sample that 82% of the lead users developed innovative products and only 1% of the users showing no lead user characteristics did so (see Figure 11).
