Growth Evaluation Based on Morphological Description of Carpals

2007
The survey regards the construction carpal bones ossification model of children. The main target is to obtain a sequence of growth factors to depict the ossified processes of carpals. The proposed carpals region of interest is based on geometric condition of the wrist. In order to quantitatively evaluate the individual bone of carpals, each bone of carpals was isolated and analyzed. The features included area, contour length, and shape compactness of each bone at each age of standard atlas which was obtained by statistics of database. Due to orientation of bones and non-isotropic of growth direction, the calibration and angle scanning operation were considered herein. In calibration, principle axis alignment by using overlaying the given two bones of neighboring age with minimum distance searching. The sequence of growth factors matrices were obtained by iterating calculation of each bone on each age that the carpals ossified model could be constructed. The model can not only support to forecast the growth status of children, but to aid for bone age estimation in pediatrics. Keywords—carpal, ossification, growth weights, bone age.
