Detection and Control of Plant Diseases Caused by Fastidious Prokaryotes

1987
Due to the fastidious nature of mycoplasmalike organisms, spiroplasmas and xylem-limited bacteria, the detection of plant diseases caused by these agents has been difficult until recently. Symptoms of plant diseases caused by fastidious prokaryotes are distinct in a few cases, but most often similar to the ones caused by other pathogens. Isolation techniques and various detection methods will be discussed. Good insect control, removal of alternative hosts, and diseased plants, use of chemicals, and resistant varieties are important for the disease management of fastidious prokaryotic plant diseases.
