Intellectually Challenged Children AND their families

2012
The families having intellectually disabled child not only experience structural and functional changes but also experience a number of social and economic hardships. The child with intellectual disability has limitations in cognitive functioning, lacks social competence and personal adequacy; as such he/she becomes dependant on the family members. To meet unique needs of the child, the family members spend extra time, energy and resources. This unusual burden drains off both material and non-material resources of the family. In absence of appropriate social and economic support, such families continue to suffer. However, favourable results can be expected if proper and need based programs are initiated for family members along with development of social and economic support systems
