High-Risk Behavior and High-Risk Groups in Road Traffic

2011
The Institute for Transport Economics carried out a Strategic Institute Programme (SIP) focusing on high risk groups and road fatalities. Their research from 2005 to 2010 looked at police-reported accident data; surveys of drivers involved in accidents; and Norwegian Public Roads Administration reports. High-risk behaviors that contributed most to accident risk included: speeding, seat belt use, driving under the influence, distraction, and driving while drowsy. Factors that contributed most to accident risk included: vulnerable road users (pedestrians/cyclists or motorcyclists), young male drivers, heavy vehicles, visual impairments, and age over 75.
