Development of hot forged drill bits of low alloy steel for petroliferous applications

2008
This work aims at showing the feasibility of partial substitution of the machining process by hot forging, to obtain AISI 8640 steel drills bits, used to bore holes in rocks. This paper presents the tooling to obtain the piece, together with the procedure used for testing, comparing the force found in practice to computer simulation. It was found that the process proposed saved 3.5% of materials, and presented a 13% increase in piece hardness in the quenched and tempered state, compared to the piece produced conventionally.
