Tracking Coastal Change Over Kuala Terengganu Using Landsat

2019
The main objective of this study is to track the coastal change over Kuala Terengganu coastal water from 1989 to 2018. In this study, dataset acquired from Landsat 5 and 8 have been used. The image was processed using Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) to differentiate land and water body. The result shows that, before the reclamation of the coastal for the extension of the airport runaway, accretion is a dominant process over this area. After the reclamation, the erosion occurs at the north and accretion at the south. During the period of 2006–2014, 0.0229 km2 of coastal was lost due to the erosion. However, the reclamation and accretion processes contribute about 0.972 km2 of new land over this area. Overall, for the period of 1989–2018, the reclamation and accretion contribute 1.337 km2 of new land/coastal to this study area.
